Tourism on the agenda as the National Assembly Committee responsible for scrutinising the First Minister, Carwyn Jones AM, will quiz the Welsh Government’s approach to developing the sector in Wales.

What will the Committee be discussing?
The Committee for the Scrutiny of the First Minister will be focusing on the current state of the tourism industry in Wales and the Welsh Government’s approach to supporting and developing it.
In particular, the Committee intends to explore:
The Welsh Government's tourism strategy 'Partnership for Growth', including the 'thematic years' approach and the latest tourism performance statistics;
The potential impact of Brexit on tourism;
The support available to small tourism businesses under the Welsh Government's Economic Action Plan
According to Wales Tourism Alliance one in every seven jobs in Wales is tourism related, and in some areas of Wales tourism is the mainstay of the economy. There are 18,000 businesses in the industry spread throughout Wales, mostly small-to-medium sized and many family focused.
From Great Britain alone, 9 million overnight trips were made to Wales in 2017, while in the same year there were almost 100 million Tourism Day visits generally, generating £4,332 million.
Chair of the Scrutiny of the First Minister Committee, Ann Jones AM, said:
“Tourism plays a vital part in the Welsh economy and our ability to market the country to visitors beyond our borders plays a critical role in the sector’s survival and development.
“For many businesses and people in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion and across Wales this meeting gives us an opportunity to ask the First Minister about his tourism strategy, the latest tourism performance data and the potential impact of Brexit on the sector.”
Committee Members will also have an opportunity to question the First Minister on other topical issues during the meeting.
