Former Australian Prime Minster Julia Gillard will give a key note lecture about the barriers faced by women in public life at the Pierhead on 2 July.

Ms Gillard has been invited to address an audience by Presiding Officer, Dame Rosemary Butler AM, as part of her #POWiPL "Women in Public Life" campaign.

Entry to the event is free but all 120 tickets were snapped up within hours of the event being announced.

"I am deeply honoured by this most special invitation to return to Wales for this very meaningful occasion," said Ms Gillard.

"I am looking forward to a warm exchange of views and perspective with those who will be present under the auspices of the distinguished Presiding Officer."

The lecture is part of the Presiding Officer's #POWiPL campaign which she launched four years ago in a bid to get more Welsh women involved in public life.

That campaign has included:

  • the launch of an online advice portal which gives women information about how they can get involved and become school governors, local councillors, magistrates or take up other public posts; and,
  • a development scheme which provides mentoring opportunities for women in Wales.

Another key strand of the campaign has been to get inspirational women to deliver keynote lectures at the Pierhead.

Speakers have included Shami Chakrabarti, director of civil liberties organisation Liberty; media commentator Janet Street-Porter; former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark; and scientist and broadcaster Baroness Susan Greenfield.

The session with Julia Gillard is the last in that series.

"To get a woman of Julia Gillard's stature to come and address an audience at the National Assembly is a great coup for Wales," Dame Rosemary said.

"In spite of the barriers that women face in public life, she managed to rise to the top job in Australian politics.

"During her time as Prime Minister she faced often outrageous personal attacks, from the media and political opponents, that men in her position would simply not face.

"It demonstrated that women still face very real barriers when trying to rise to the top in the public sphere.

"But Julia Gillard has been an inspiration to women around the world.  She demonstrated that women can break down that barrier if they have the confidence to do so.

"I am looking forward to welcoming her to the National Assembly and listening to her views on how women can break down those barriers."
