Member ballot law to help safeguard the future of Welsh playing fields

6 October 2010

The National Assembly for Wales has today (6 October) backed a new law which will result in local councils having to consult more widely over closure-threatened playing fields.

The National Assembly Playing Fields (Community Involvement in Disposal Decisions) (Wales) Measure was proposed by South Wales West AM Dai Lloyd.

He was able to propose the Measure after being selected through the ballot system that gives Assembly Members the opportunity to propose new laws.

“Playing fields are something that communities across the length and breadth of Wales use on a regular basis,” said Dr Lloyd.

“We are losing more and more of these facilities to development and sometimes without local communities being given the opportunity to have their say.

“That’s why I wanted to bring forward this proposed measure and I thank my colleagues in the chamber for backing the proposal today.”

The Measure will now go before the Privy Council for approval in December.
