A majority of Members of the National Assembly’s Finance Committee has endorsed the preferred candidate to chair the Welsh Revenue Authority.

Kathryn Bishop appeared before the Committee on Thursday 16 February in a pre-appointment hearing, the first time a hearing of this nature has happened for a Ministerial appointment.

While the majority of the Committee concluded that Ms. Bishop was a suitable choice to Chair the Welsh Revenue Authority, one member disagreed that the preferred candidate should be appointed.

Committee Chair Simon Thomas AM said:

“Whilst one Member was not content to endorse the appointment, the other Members of the Committee felt that Ms Bishop was a suitable appointment to this important role. Miss Bishop has a wealth of experience and we hope she will utilise this to ensure the establishment of the WRA is a success for Wales”

“This is the first time a pre-appointment hearing has taken place for a Ministerial appointment in the National Assembly for Wales. I believe that hearings of this nature increase the accountability of public appointments and contribute to ensuring that high standards are maintained across the public sector in Wales. These hearings are a regular occurrence in Westminster and I would hope that this leads the way for more hearings across the Committees of the Assembly”
