National Assembly Committee to examine response to storm damage in Wales

8 January 2014

Following the storm damage sustained by the Welsh coast in recent weeks, the Chair of the Environment and Sustainability Committee has invited the Minister for Natural Resources and Food to appear before the Committee in January.

An invitation is also being issued to Natural Resources Wales, the body responsible for co-ordinating flood response efforts with local authorities and emergency services.

In addition to looking at the response to recent events, this session will also provide an opportunity to reflect on the Welsh Government’s progress against the recommendations made in the Committee’s Coastal Protection report (published in October 2012).

In it, the Committee said there was ‘significant room for improvement’ in delivery and resourcing of the Welsh Government’s national coastal protection strategy.

It also uncovered a gap between the ambitions contained in the Welsh Government’s strategy and the resources available to deliver coastal protection and engage communities at highest risk.

The Welsh Government accepted all 11 recommendations made by the Committee.
