Service users from Conwy Connect for Learning Disabilities attended a workshop this week in order to hear about who represents them in the National Assembly for Wales and UK Parliament and also about the ways in which they can get involved.

Conwy Connect helps to promote the rights of people with a learning disability living within the county of Conwy in North Wales. Their aims include ensuring people have equality of choice and opportunity in the community they live in. They provide an essential link between all stakeholders whilst keeping members up-to-date of relevant changes in learning disability services.

The workshop explained the role and work of the National Assembly for Wales and UK Parliament to attendees, made them aware of their local Assembly Members and Members of Parliament and evoked debate on the political issues currently facing Wales.

It gave them the opportunity to ask questions about the current work both organisations including current live consultations and show them how decisions made there affect their day-to-day lives.

Speaking after the workshop, Caryl Mai Williams of the National Assembly for Wales Outreach team said:

"It was a great opportunity to work closely with the UK Parliament Outreach team and to also meet service users from Conwy Connect. The group received the opportunity to learn more about the Assembly and the UK Parliament and who represents them and to also learn about ways in which they can get involved. I hope everyone enjoyed the session."

Speaking after the workshop, Elizabeth Price, UK Parliament Outreach officer said:

"Working with the Welsh Assembly Outreach team in Colwyn Bay was a great opportunity to bring our services together for the session and help create better understanding of how the UK Parliament and Welsh Assembly fit together, and it's something I've personally wanted to do for a long time.

"With the general election coming up, the public are asking more questions about how it all works – and we're there to try and help answer these questions! I'm looking forward to collaborating on future projects with the Welsh Assembly team, and hope we can develop some new ways of working together as a result of this event for Conwy Connect!"

Speaking after the workshop, Sue Davies, Conwy Connect Senior Co-ordinator said:

"We were delighted that the National Assembly Outreach Team and the Parliament Outreach Service partnered together to deliver a joint interactive and interesting workshop to our members which included people with learning disabilities, parent/carers and Voluntary organisations.

"It was enjoyed by all. It's not easy making politics interesting but they both did through the use of photographs, videos and users friendly exercises."

The Assembly's Outreach Team work hard to visit groups and organisations in all parts of Wales and provide information on the core functions of the Assembly, any relevant consultations and how they can get involved in important decisions that affect us all in Wales.
