The National Assembly for Wales has today (29 March) formally approved the move to further powers following the result of the referendum in March.

The Order, put forward by the Welsh Government, should come into effect from 5 May 2011, the day Wales goes to the polls for the Assembly election.

The Order effectively sees the end of the established Legislative Competence Order process, which saw powers handed to the National Assembly on a case-by-case basis.

The Assembly will no longer have to ask permission from the UK Parliament to make laws, which will in future be known as Assembly Acts rather than Measures.

Instead, it will be able to make laws in all matters contained within the 20 subjects already devolved to the Assembly, which include health, education, the environment and rural affairs.
