Should the Assembly get the power to make laws on organ donation? – have your say

Legislation Committee No.1 is currently considering the proposed National Assembly for Wales (Legislative Competence) (Health & Health Services) Order 2011.

If approved it would provide the National Assembly for Wales with powers to legislate on how consent is obtained for the use of an adult’s body and organs for the purposes of transplantation.

The Committee now wants to hear from the people of Wales what they think of this proposal.

“This is a very emotive issue to many people across Wales,” said Committee Chair, Rosemary Butler AM.

“This Committee has been charged with considering and reporting on whether the National Assembly for Wales should have the power to make laws in this area and that is the issue that we shall study.

“It is important to point out that at this stage it is about the transfer of powers rather than the actual question of what format any future legislation should take and it’s that issue that the Committee will scrutinise.”

The Committee is asking interested parties whether they are content with the National Assembly for Wales acquiring the ability to make laws on organ donation as set out in the proposed Order.

The questionnaire issued by the Committee can be accessed here.

The closing date for this consultation is 21 January 2011.
