Care experienced parents - Petition of the Year 2023

A petition to improve support for care experienced parents.

“Many care leavers have social services intervention when they give birth. Currently, if there is any concern, a parent is taken away from their home, family and friends then placed in a foster home or residential home to be assessed with little thought to the parent’s triggers and mental wellbeing. We want to fact find to see if a better solution for parent and child is needed.” – Petitioner

The petition raised awareness of:

  • Many care experienced parents often face discrimination and lack the necessary support.
  • Information on what happens to the children of care experienced parents is not routinely collected.

What happened?

  • The Committee heard evidence from care experienced parents and a range of experts.
  • This evidence fed into a wider inquiry on reform for care experienced children and young people by the Children and Young People’s Committee.
  • The Welsh Government accepted the Committee’s recommendations in principle and will investigate how they can collect the data.
