33-inch pony to visit Senedd to raise awareness of anti-neglect petition

12 October 2011

A miniature shetland pony will be brought to the Senedd today (12 October) as part of a petition calling on the Welsh Government to stop the neglect and abandonment of horses by enforcing microchipping legislation more effectively.

The petition, which has more 2,000 signatures, was started by the Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies which is concerned that too many abandoned, neglected and injured horses cannot be traced to an owner because they are not microchipped.

Legislation states that all foals born after 2009 must be microchipped and the petitioners want the law to be enforced consistently.

The petition will be handed in to representatives from the Assembly’s cross-party Petitions Committee at 12.00pm.

More details about the petition can be found here.
