Assembly Committee to hold inquiry into Welsh Government’s historic environment policy

1 June 2012

A National Assembly for Wales Committee is seeking people’s views on how effectively  the Welsh Government is looking after Wales’s historic buildings and monuments.

The Communities, Equality and Local Government Committee’s inquiry will focus on a number of issues including the effectiveness of the current systems used by the Welsh Government for protecting and managing historic buildings, ancient monuments, marine and archaeological sites, as well as historic parks and gardens.

The inquiry will also consider the implications of a possible merger of the functions of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales and other organisations, including Cadw.

Wales has three World Heritage Sites, 34,000 scheduled monuments and listed buildings and more than 400 registered historic landscapes, parks and gardens.

“Wales is a country with a rich and varied history, and that history is brought to life in our wealth of historic places across Wales,” said Chair of the Communities, Equality and Local Government Committee, Ann Jones AM.

“This inquiry is timely, as the Welsh Government intends to introduce a Heritage Bill in 2014-15.  The Minister for Housing, Regeneration and Heritage, Huw Lewis AM, has also set up a working group to look at how the functions of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales could be merged with the functions of other organisations, including Cadw.”

“I know from experience how proud the people of Wales are of their architectural heritage, and we look forward to hearing their thoughts and ideas on the Welsh Government’s historic environment policy.”

Anyone wishing to submit information and evidence as part of the inquiry can either email celg.committee@wales.gov.uk or write to: Committee Clerk, Communities, Equality and Local Government Committee, National Assembly for Wales, Cardiff Bay, Cardiff, CF99 1NA.

The closing date for submissions is 29 June 2012.
