Children and Young People Committee public meeting

19 March 2010

Event: Children and Young People Committee public meeting
When: Monday, 22 March, 10:00 – 12:00
Where: Rhyl Town Hall, Wellington Road, Rhyl, LL18 1AB

The Children and Young People Committee will be holding a public meeting in Rhyl as part of its Safe Places to Play and Hang Out inquiry.

Rhyl Action Group, Iwth Pen Youth Club and Rhyl Football Club will all be giving evidence to the inquiry in the morning. There will also be informal evidence gathering sessions and workshops with parents and children in the afternoon.

The inquiry was formed as a result of the committee’s ‘It’s all about you’ report, which was carried out in the summer of 2009. The report showed that children in Wales were concerned by the current levels of safe places for them to play.

Chair of the Committee Helen Mary Jones AM said: “My committee colleagues and I are very much looking forward to our trip to Rhyl.

“We have already heard a lot of important evidence so far, but this is a chance to see for ourselves some of the work being done to provide safe areas and also to hear directly the concerns of both children and parents in a more relaxed environment.

“At the beginning of the inquiry we asked children and young people to fill in a questionnaire asking them for their own ideas on safe places to play and hang out.

“I am please to say we received more than 500 responses to that questionnaire and those will all play a part in shaping the conclusions and recommendations in our report.”

As part of the day in Rhyl the AMs will visit the Integrated Family Centre in Gronant and Rhyl adventure playground.

While the afternoon workshop with parents and children is already booked up, the evening workshop (18.30 – 19.30) is open to all and is being run on a ‘drop in and see for yourself’ basis.

Anyone wanting to attend the formal public meeting in the morning should book tickets through the National Assembly for Wales information line on 0845 010 5500, email assembly.bookings@wales.gsi.gov.uk, or visit the National Assembly website at www.assemblywales.org.
