Committee hears evidence on Welsh Government progress in E-Coli prevention

22 June 2010

The Health, Wellbeing and Local Government Committee will, on Thursday (June 24), take evidence on what is being done to prevent an E-Coli outbreak in Wales.

The Committee will hear from Professor Hugh Pennington who chaired a public inquiry after the 2005 outbreak which saw a total of 157 identified cases across parts of Wales.

Of those 157 cases 31 people were admitted to hospital with E-Coli and one, five year old Mason Jones sadly died.

The Committee will also consider evidence from the mother of Mason, Sharon Mills, and from Julie Price whose son Garyn also contracted E-Coli and suffered renal failure before eventually recovering.

The report which came out of the public inquiry found that the food hygiene requirements in place at the time of the outbreak should have been enough to prevent it.

But Professor Pennington also made 24 recommendations to safeguard against future incidents.

The Committee will consider what progress has been made towards implementing those recommendations.

Further evidence will also be considered from Consumer Focus Wales and the Food Standards Agency.
