Commonwealth Day celebrations at the Senedd

14 March 2011

An evening event will be held at the Senedd tonight (14 March) to mark Commonwealth Day 2011.

The reception will welcome to the Senedd many of the delegates of the Commonwealth Local Government Conference, which is taking place at City Hall this week.

Commonwealth Day aims to promote understanding of global issues, international co-operation and the work of the Commonwealth’s organisations.

This year’s theme is ‘Women as Agents of Change’ and a number of Assembly Members will be in attendance.

Janet Ryder AM, Chair of the Wales Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Branch, said: “The National Assembly for Wales and its CPA Branch prides itself on being an outward-looking organisation and building relationships with countries and peoples across all continents.

“We recognise that we have much to learn from other countries and cultures and I hope that this event will offer an opportunity to exchange ideas and good working practices.

“One of the many ideals that the CPA and our Branch hold dear is the equality and promotion of women in democracy and decision-making. I’m therefore particularly pleased at the relevance of this year’s Commonwealth theme: ‘Women as Agents of Change’.

“We very much welcome this opportunity to meet the conference visitors from across the breadth of the Commonwealth’s 54 countries and to welcome you here alongside many of Wales’s international communities to join us in celebrating Commonwealth Day at the iconic Senedd – the home of Welsh democracy.”
