Dewi the Dragon to visit Royal Welsh Show in drive to get more young people involved in democracy

Youngsters attending the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells will be urged to have their say on the future work of the National Assembly’s Children & Young People Committee.

The committee will be at the show on Monday July 20th to find out what issues are important to youngsters in Wales.

Dewi the Dragon and committee members will be walking around the showground to encourage young people to have their say and vote on the issues that concern them most.

“The youngsters attending the Royal Welsh Show are the voters and even politicians of the future,” said Chair of the committee Helen Mary Jones AM.

“So it’s essential that we raise awareness and get our young people interested in the work of the National Assembly.

“By encouraging them to voice their opinions on what issues we, as Assembly Members, should be looking at, we hope to demonstrate that what they say really counts and can affect change.”

Participants will be asked to fill in a ballot paper outlining what issues they think should be investigated in the future. When the results of the summer vote are in, the Committee hopes to explore some of the issues raised on behalf of children and young people.

This outreach approach forms part of the National Assembly’s drive to get more people in Wales involved in the democratic process. At the Llangollen International Eisteddfod recently, over 700 young people voted on the issues that mattered to them.

Members of the committee will be at the Royal Welsh Show on Monday 20 July, at the National Assembly for Wales Stand between 2 - 3pm
