First Welsh Government Bill to be scrutinised by National Assembly committee

9 December 2011

The National Assembly for Wales’s Communities, Equality and Local Government Committee is to conduct an inquiry into the Local Government Byelaws (Wales) Bill, the first new law proposed by the Welsh Government in the Fourth Assembly.

The Local Government Byelaws (Wales) Bill aims to simplify procedures for making and enforcing local authority byelaws, would require authorities to consult locally before making a byelaw and would remove the requirement for confirmation by Welsh Government ministers.

“This is the first piece of legislation to come before the National Assembly since it gained full law-making powers as a result of the ‘yes’ vote in the referendum last March,” said Ann Jones AM, Chair of the Communities, Equality and Local Government Committee.

“It is also the first Bill to be scrutinised using the new committee structure put in place at the start of the Fourth Assembly.

“I would urge anyone with an interest in this particular area to study the terms of reference for this inquiry and contribute their own thoughts and opinions.”
