The National Assembly for Wales' Public Accounts Committee has made a number of recommendations it feels are needed to help the Glastir scheme enable farmers to enhance our natural environment.

The Glastir agri-environment scheme was intended to improve the Welsh Government's support for environmental improvement in Wales's farms. Following a September 2011 report by the Auditor General for Wales, the Committee undertook a short inquiry, seeking evidence from key environmental and farming organisations, as well as the Welsh Government.

The Committee focussed on three main issues:

  • How the scheme could support greater change in practices at participating farms
  • How the scheme could be one of a range of interventions to tackle poor practice at farms
  • How the administration of the scheme could be achieve better value for money

Darren Millar AM Chair of the Public Accounts Committee said:
"As the Auditor General's report of September 2014 showed, while the Glastir agri-environment scheme was better than previous schemes, more can be done to improve the effectiveness and value for money of Glastir.

"I trust the Committee's report will help shape the scheme's development in future and assist the Welsh Government, landowners and others to promote environmental improvement across the whole country.."
