Iconic Pierhead building prepares to greet 100,000th visitor as it celebrates a year of ‘informing, involving and inspiring’.

Almost one hundred thousand visitors have visited Cardiff Bay’s landmark Pierhead since it re-opened its doors exactly a year ago today (1 March).

The Assembly-owned Grade One listed building has been transformed into a visitor attraction designed to inform, involve and inspire people when they visit Cardiff Bay.

As well as hosting events for a range of organisations, the building also complements the work of the National Assembly in widening participation in the political process.

“It is a fantastic facility that is open to everyone in Wales,” said Presiding Officer Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas AM.

“It tells the history of Cardiff Bay and devolution through a fantastic selection of interactive visitor attractions.

“It also encourages people to take a direct part in the political process by registering their views on the key topics that the Assembly Members discuss.

“The Pierhead has also hosted a series of key events including the Pierhead Sessions last spring when big names such as environmentalist Geroge Monbiot gave a key note address.”

A series of events will take place at the Pierhead throughout March to mark the anniversary, which also ties in with International Women’s Day on 8 March.

From 8 March the people of Wales will be asked to choose a Welsh female hero from the past from a shortlist which can be viewed on the National Assembly’s website at www.assemblywales.org.

Other events include:

  • Events and exhibitions running from 8 March to mark International Women’s Day;

  • An audience with renowned linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky, on 11 March, in the Pierhead. Tickets available to the public by ringing 0845 0105500 (tickets available from Thursday 3 March);

  • an e-democracy engagement seminar at the Pierhead on 30 March.

The National Assembly for Wales will also host a series of events for the Commonwealth Local Government Forum, a biennial event that brings together leading parliamentarians from the Commonwealth countries to discuss a range of issues.

These include:

  • A Commonwealth day reception at the Senedd on 14 March hosted by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Wales Branch with the theme, “Women, agents of change”;

  • And a delegation of Canadian parliamentarians giving a series of Q&A sessions at the Pierhead on 16 March
