Lighting a Candle - Presiding Officer supports International Day to End Violence Against Women

25 November 2013

The National Assembly for Wales’s Presiding Officer, Rosemary Butler AM, will mark International Day to End Violence Against Women by lighting a candle at a service in Llandaff Cathedral on 25 November.

The event is organised annually by BAWSO, a Welsh charity which delivers specialist services to people from Black and Ethnic Minority backgrounds who are affected by domestic abuse and other forms of abuse.

This year the event has been organised in partnership with Welsh Women’s Aid, Cardiff Women’s Aid, Llamau (a charity that provides support for women who are domestically abused) and Safer Wales.

“The fact that so many women still suffer domestic abuse is a tragedy that we must address,” said the Presiding Officer.

“Many victims suffer alone, often unable to find a way of breaking the cycle of violence because they don’t know how to access support.

“By raising awareness through the International Day to End Violence Against Women and holding this event, hopefully we can give women across Wales hope that they will be able to break free from abusive partners.”
