Mental Health Services are still failing children and young people

24 November 2009

The Chair of the Public Accounts Committee for the National Assembly for Wales has expressed his disappointment at the standard of care for children and young people from Welsh mental health services.

The statement comes in response to a joint report from the Wales Audit Office, Health Inspectorate Wales, Estyn and the Care and Social Services Inspectorate which was released today, 24th November.

Committee Chair Jonathan Morgan AM said: I am disappointed to learn that mental health services are still failing many children and young people, despite some recent improvements. It is clear, on reading this report, that urgent action is needed to bring services up to the standard that people deserve.”

"The way mental health services are planned and provided has been highlighted as a problem that is preventing further improvement. I hope that the new Health Boards, local authorities and the Assembly Government work together to address the practical and wide ranging recommendations in this report.”

"The Assembly Government also needs to develop an action plan within six months to identify how the quality and availability of mental health services will be improved.”
