The National Assembly for Wales' Children, Young People and Education Committee has outlined 12 recommendations to the Welsh Government that it says are needed to close the attainment gap for children from low-income families in Wales.

The Committee has reported following its inquiry into Educational Outcomes for Children from Low Income Households. During the inquiry, the Committee considered written and oral evidence from the Education Minister, Estyn, The Bevan Foundation, Save the Children and a number of primary and secondary schools around Wales.

Ann Jones AM, Chair of the Children, Young People and Education Committee said:

"The Welsh Government faces considerable challenges in closing the attainment gap for children from low-income families.

"Whilst some progress has been made across the key stages in recent years, the scale of the change needed to meet this challenge should not be underestimated.

"The inquiry aimed to review the effectiveness of the Welsh Government's policies and we have made twelve recommendations we feel would give children from low-income families in Wales the best chance in narrowing the educational attainment gap."
