More powers to the Assembly to strengthen the effectiveness of school governance

2 February 2010 The National Assembly for Wales should be given further power so that it can bring in new laws to strengthen the role of school governors.

That’s the view of the Assembly’s Legislation Committee No.4 who have backed the proposed Legislative Competence Education Order 2010.

The order will give the Assembly the power to make laws(Assembly Measures) in areas including support and advice for governors, governors training and the relationship between governors’ effectiveness and school performance.

At present the National Assembly does not have the powers to make Measures to address these issues.

“This proposed LCO will lead to improvements in the effectiveness of school governance,” said Committee Chair, Mike German AM.

“It will allow the Welsh Government to bring forward Measures that can strengthen the way in which it influences the governing process.”

“It will make the governing process more compatible with the direction of education policy in Wales which is becoming increasingly distinct from other parts of the United Kingdom.”
