National Assembly continues its drive towards low carbon emissions

10 August 2011

New figures show the National Assembly for Wales is continuing to improve its energy efficiency.

They demonstrate that the Assembly is halfway towards achieving the tough carbon reduction target agreed by its administrative body the Assembly Commission in 2009.

Then, the Commission committed to reducing energy emissions by 40 percent by 2015.

According to figures released this week the Commission has achieved a 19 percent reduction in energy emissions compared to 2008/09 levels.

“Working sustainably is a statutory responsibility of the Assembly Commission and energy consumption continues to be our most significant resource demand, primarily for lighting and powering our buildings,” said Assembly Commissioner Peter Black AM.

“These latest figures are pleasing and demonstrate the initiatives we have put in place, such as more efficient use of heating and electricity including the Senedd’s biomass system and awareness-raising among Assembly Members and staff, are having a positive effect.

“But while the positive side is that we are halfway towards achieving our own tough target, the other side is that we still have the other half to go.

“I am confident that with further innovations and ideas concerning our energy use and the continued support of everyone who works and visits here, we will move closer to our goal of being a sustainable Assembly for the future.”
