A team of staff from the National Assembly for Wales have finished a 250-mile charity bike ride from the Assembly’s Colwyn Bay office to the Senedd in Cardiff.

The eleven riders set off on Friday 16 August with the aim of completing the journey, mostly along the route of the Lon Las trail, in five days.

So far, more than £2000 has been raised in support of Cancer Research Wales and the Ty Hafan children’s hospice in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The team was given a warm welcome by their fellow staff members on the steps of the Senedd.

“I’d like to congratulate all those taking part for their inspiring efforts on what sounds like a demanding journey, especially with the weekend’s inclement weather,” said Presiding Officer, Rosemary Butler AM.

“It is fantastic to see Assembly staff committing to this fundraising effort and raising money for such good causes.”

Among the landmarks the team passed along the way were Caernarfon and Criccieth Castles, Trawsfynydd Power Station, Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen y Fan.

“We’re all so thrilled both to have all finished and to have beaten our target of raising £2000 for Cancer Research Wales and Ty Hafan,” said Aled Elwyn Jones, who is originally from Denbigh and now works in the Assembly Commission’s Chamber Secretariat department.

“The weather wasn’t always the kindest but we kept each other’s spirits up along the way. It really was a great team effort.”
