National Assembly for Wales to host ‘Milestones of Welsh Democracy’ day

6 November 2009

The National Assembly for Wales will host an event this Sunday (November 8th) to mark the milestones in Welsh democracy in collaboration with Llafur, the Welsh People’s History Society.

The day, entitled ‘Milestones of Welsh Democracy: From Chartism to the National Assembly’, will mark the 170th anniversary of the South Wales Rising in 1839, the fact that in 1929 women were able to cast their vote for the first time, and 10 years of devolution.

The event will be opened by a talk from Professor K O Morgan entitled ‘Issues in democratic change, from Chartism to Devolution’.

Christine Chapman AM will then deliver a talk on ‘Women and Democratic Change in Wales, from the Suffragettes to Devolution’, and the National Assembly’s Presiding Officer, Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas, will be the subject of a Q & A session on 10 years of devolution, and its future in Wales.

“This event is an opportunity to celebrate some of the major achievements that are rooted in Welsh history and that have real relevance for our lives today,” said Presiding Officer Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas.

“What better place to mark the milestones of welsh history than the very building where we are celebrating 10 years of devolution and where, for the first time since the 10th century, we are making laws for the people of Wales”.
