- First ever Future Generations Leadership Academy announced, with backing from National Assembly for Wales
The first intake of apprentices have been announced for a brand new scheme to develop Wales' future leaders.
The Future Generations Leadership Academy is a new 10-month pilot initiative which will give young apprentices in Wales the tools to lead and take on challenges of the future under the principles of the Well-being of Future Generations Act.
Among the first cohort of apprentices announced today by the Future Generations Commissioner of Wales is Hayley Rees who is a Training Officer at National Assembly for Wales. Hayley joins 20 apprentices from a wide range of organisations across Wales who will benefit from the Academy's programme of seminars, mentoring and workshops.

"I wish the Future Generations Leadership Academy's first band of apprentices the best of luck as they embark on an invaluable programme of seminars and experiences. The National Assembly for Wales is proud to support this initiative, as part of our backing for skills development in Wales and commitment to staff development in order to support a Parliament which is fit for the future. By applying the principles of the Well-being of Future Generations Act, these future leaders will be fully equipped to tackle the challenges which lie ahead, and will inspire colleagues and others around them to do the same."
National Assembly for Wales is one of 14 partners in the scheme; with an apprentice from each establishment among the first intake. They include: Arup; Principality; Transport for Wales; Public Health Wales; National Assembly for Wales; Wales Millennium Centre; University of South Wales; Natural Resources Wales; Office of the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales; BBC Cymru; Scouts Cymru; Costain; Celsa Steel; Public Health Wales.

"This new pilot programme offers our talented leaders of tomorrow an opportunity to be part of building a movement of change, to create a Wales that brings to life the vision and ambition of the Act.
"Thinking long-term and creating policies that address the needs of future generations is core to developing the leadership skills within our public services in Wales. Across the world, we are seeing young people mobilise and act on issues such as climate change and it is important that our young leaders have a seat at the table so they can hold our current leaders to account.
"I want this Academy to provide the focus and opportunity for existing and future leaders to collaborate and develop policies that are equitable and sustainable. This is an exciting and necessary part of my role in helping to drive the required cultural change so that our public services are truly supporting and leading a better Wales."
The Well-being of Future Generations Act requires public bodies in Wales to think about the long-term impact of their decisions, to work better with people, communities and each other, and to prevent persistent problems such as poverty, health inequalities and climate change.
