A petition calling for a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses in Wales has been handed to the National Assembly's Petitions Committee.

The full wording of the petition is as follows:

We, the undersigned:

- Believe the complex needs of wild animals can never be adequately met in a circus environment;

- Note that wild animals continue to face the prospect of life in an unsuitable circus environment in Wales;

- Urge the Welsh Government to ensure an outright ban on the use of wild animals in circuses is introduced in Wales as soon as possible.

The petition collected more than 7,000 signatures and was brought forward by RSPCA Cymru.

A petition is a way of asking the National Assembly to consider any issue, problem or proposal that the Assembly has the power to do something about.
