The National Assembly for Wales' Children, Young People and Education Committee has outlined a number of actions it says are needed to ensure that Qualifications Wales operates effectively to meet the needs of learners in Wales.

The Qualifications Wales Bill aims to establish Qualifications Wales as the independent regulatory body responsible for the recognition of awarding bodies and the review and approval of non-degree qualifications in Wales.

The principal aims of the new body will be to:

  • ensure that qualifications, and the qualifications system, are effective for meeting the reasonable needs of learners in Wales; and
  • to promote public confidence in qualifications and in the Welsh qualifications system.

Chair of the Young People and Education Committee Ann Jones AM said:
"While the Committee fully supports the establishment of Qualifications Wales we have made a number of recommendations we feel would strengthen the Bill.
"We acknowledge concerns raised by stakeholders and believe that the Welsh Government must work closely with the Chief Executive of Qualification Wales, prior to its formal establishment, to ensure that any potential problems are fully considered in advance."
