Welsh Government should maximise Air Link service's potential says Assembly Committee

The National Assembly for Wales's Public Accounts Committee says the Welsh Government should do more to evaluate the marketing and passenger numbers for the Anglesey to Cardiff air service.

Prior to the end of the air service's contract last year, the Public Accounts Committee's interim report on the air service made nine recommendations that the Welsh Government accepted.

The final report reviews how the air service operates, how the Welsh Government made its decision to continue the twice-daily weekday flight service and how it conducted the re-tendering exercise.

Darren Millar AM Chair of the Public Accounts Committee said:

"Passenger numbers for the air service are still disappointing so we were pleased that the Welsh Government responded positively to our interim report in requiring extra marketing for the service in the new contract.

"In this report we make further recommendations for how the Welsh Government should monitor the new marketing arrangements, along with passenger numbers and their profile, to secure increasing numbers of passengers in the future and ultimately provide a better return for the public subsidy invested in the service.

"By taking the decision whether to continue the air service late in the day, the Welsh Government reduced its options for getting the most interest from operators. We encourage the Welsh Government to plan better for expiring contracts, to allow earlier decisions and the best value for taxpayers' money".
