Work has begun on the Grade One listed Pierhead building in Cardiff Bay to adapt it into a distinctive venue for Assembly-sponsored events, conferences, and public visits.

The landmark has been closed off while the work gets underway and is due to be completed at the beginning of next year.

The development aims to complement the work of the Assembly and engage voluntary and community organisations in public debates and exhibitions, with the aim of widening involvement in democracy.

It will also be open to the public, with visitors being offered an interactive experience using sound projection and movement sensors, enabling them to explore the history of the building and its changing landscape over the years.

“This is a flagship project which forms part of the Assembly's programme of events marking 10 years of devolution,” said Presiding Officer Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas.

“It will chart the story of how Cardiff Bay has been at the forefront of Welsh economic and civil identity for the best part of 200 years, from its role as one of the biggest ports in the world during the age of King Coal to its current role at the centre of governance in a devolved Wales.
