Outreach and Youth Entrepreneurship Inquiry

The National Assembly is currently looking into youth entrepreneurship, in particular the experiences of young entrepreneurs in Wales and how the Welsh Government promotes entrepreneurship amongst young people.
To gather the views of young people across Wales, the Assembly’s Outreach team arranged two visits for Assembly Members to projects in Newport and Deeside, as well as conducting video interviews and a focus group. The Committee also heard from Dale Williams – finalist of Masterchef 2013 – who set up his own recruitment firm at the age of 23.

The video interview sessions involved a total of 37 young entrepreneurs and took place across Wales. The Outreach team spoke to young business owners who run a variety of different businesses; from coffee shops to app translation, to boutiques and agriculture.

Outreach officers also visited Mountain Ash to conduct a focus group with young people about youth entrepreneurship. The 11 participants talked about issues that affected them, ranging from the potential rewards of going into business to the influence of TV programmes such as Dragon’s Den in motivating entrepreneurship.
